What is VeChain?

VeChain is an enterprise-grade Layer-1 blockchain built for supply chain transparency, product traceability, and sustainability applications. Founded in 2015 by Sunny Lu (former CIO of Louis Vuitton China) and Jay Zhang (former PwC executive), VeChain launched its own public blockchain — VeChainThor — in 2018.

VeChain's defining architecture is a dual-token system. VET is the primary value token: it is staked to secure the network and generates VTHO (VeThor Token) as a reward. VTHO is the gas token used to pay for all transactions on VeChainThor. This separation keeps transaction costs stable — the Foundation can adjust the VTHO generation rate through governance without changing VET's value — and prevents users from needing to spend VET directly to use the network.

VeChain underwent a major tokenomics overhaul through its VeChain Renaissance upgrade series in 2025:
