What is RLUSD?
About Ripple USD
RLUSD (Ripple USD) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). Launched in December 2024, RLUSD is backed 1:1 by a segregated reserve of cash and cash equivalents custodied by BNY Mellon and is redeemable for US dollars on demand. It is natively issued on two blockchains: the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. RLUSD's market capitalization was about $2.5 billion in October 2026, according to CoinGecko, after growing more than 85% in 2026, according to Yahoo Finance. In June 2026 the XRP Ledger overtook Ethereum as the larger host for RLUSD supply for the first time. Ripple Mint, a dedicated institutional interface, handles minting and redemption operations for authorized participants.
RLUSD supply and backing
RLUSD follows the standard regulated stablecoin model: each token in circulation is matched by an equivalent dollar of reserves held in segregated accounts. No RLUSD is minted without corresponding reserve deposits, and tokens are burned when holders redeem for dollars.
Backing — 1:1 by cash and cash equivalents held in segregated reserves, custodied by BNY Mellon
Regulation — issued under NYDFS oversight; in Luxembourg, Ripple finalized an electronic money institution (EMI) licence on February 2, 2026, received a preliminary MiCA CASP approval from the CSSF in June 2026, and received full MiCA CASP authorisation on July 6, 2026
Supply — approximately $2.5 billion in market capitalization as of October 2026, according to CoinGecko
Chain distribution — the XRP Ledger overtook Ethereum as the larger host for RLUSD supply in June 2026; in September 2026 RLUSD accounted for about 93% of the roughly $1.3 billion stablecoin supply on the XRP Ledger, according to CryptoRank
What determines RLUSD's adoption
RLUSD's growth is driven by Ripple's institutional payments infrastructure and regulated market access. Ripple integrates RLUSD into its cross-border payment network, giving institutional customers (banks, payment providers, remittance operators) a regulated dollar settlement asset that operates natively on the XRP Ledger's 3 to 5 second confirmation times. Ripple's acquisition of the payments firm Rail expanded its stablecoin distribution reach.
Ripple's Luxembourg EMI licence (February 2026) and full MiCA CASP authorisation (July 2026) support regulated activity in the European Union. RLUSD's NYDFS-regulated status and BNY Mellon custody give it a compliance profile comparable to other regulated dollar stablecoins, with the added feature of native issuance on the XRP Ledger, where transaction costs are low and settlement is fast.
