"WLD is the native token of World (formerly Worldcoin), a global digital identity and financial network co-founded by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern. The project's central innovation is the Orb, a biometric device that scans a person's iris pattern to generate a cryptographic proof of personhood (World ID) without storing the actual biometric image. World ID enables users to prove they are a unique, real human on any online platform using zero-knowledge proofs, addressing the problem of AI-generated fake identities and Sybil attacks. Verified World ID holders are entitled to claim recurring grants of free WLD tokens. WLD launched in July 2023 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, with primary distribution and activity on Optimism (OP Mainnet), and the project has since launched World Chain, a dedicated Ethereum L2 built on the OP Stack. As of April 2026 nearly 18 million people had verified their humanness with the Orb across 160 countries, with more than 30 million World App users, according to a MetaMask summary. What determines WLD's value

"WLD's value depends on two parallel adoption trajectories: the growth of World ID verifications (which drives token distribution and network effect) and the utility of WLD within the World App and broader ecosystem (which drives demand from verified holders). Every new Orb verification creates another recurring token claimant, expanding the user base but also increasing sell pressure from recipients who claim and immediately convert WLD to local currency or other assets.

World ID's utility as a sybil-resistant identity layer for AI-era applications is the project's core long-term value thesis. The project faces regulatory scrutiny in several jurisdictions: Kenya suspended Orb operations in 2023, and data protection regulators in countries including Spain and Germany have acted over biometric data handling concerns. In March 2026 the World Foundation sold about 239 million WLD (about $65 million) in an OTC deal, according to Binance."
