About Arweave
AR is the native token of Arweave, a decentralized storage network that sells permanent data storage for a single upfront payment instead of a recurring subscription. Sam Williams and William Jones published the Arweave white paper in August 2017, launched a testnet in the fourth quarter of that year, and brought the mainnet live in June 2018. Arweave stores data on a structure its developers call the blockweave, where each new block references both the previous block and a randomly selected earlier block, forcing miners to hold and prove access to historical data rather than only recent state. The economic mechanism behind the permanence claim is the storage endowment: when a user pays to upload a file, a small portion covers immediate storage cost and the remainder enters a pool that pays miners over subsequent decades. The model rests on one assumption: that storage cost per gigabyte keeps falling faster than the endowment pays out. Filecoin competes in adjacent territory but solves a different problem: contract-based storage for a defined term, renewed or dropped, against Arweave's pay-once-store-forever structure.
AR tokenomics
Arweave capped AR at 66 million tokens with no mechanism to mint beyond that ceiling. 55 million AR were created in the genesis block in June 2018, and the remaining 11 million enter circulation gradually as block rewards, according to the Arweave yellow paper.
Maximum supply — 66,000,000 AR, hard-capped
Circulating supply — approximately 65.65 million AR as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko, leaving under 0.4 million AR still to be emitted as block rewards
Price — approximately $3.17 as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko
Market capitalization — approximately $208 million as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko
Initial distribution — 26.5% reserved for future project development, 19.5% private sale, 19.1% ecosystem development, 13% team under a five-year lock releasing 20% annually, 10.8% August 2017 pre-sale, 8.2% across two public sales, 2.9% advisors
Storage endowment — upload fees are deposited into a pool that pays miners over time, removing AR from liquid circulation as stored data grows
Consensus — proof of access, requiring miners to prove they hold randomly selected historical blocks, not only recent ones
Compute layer — AO, a decentralized supercomputer, launched mainnet on February 8, 2025 and writes its process state permanently to Arweave
What determines AR's value
Storage demand converts into locked AR rather than into recurring revenue. Every upload paid in AR moves most of that payment into the endowment, where it sits outside the tradable float, so growth in stored data mechanically reduces liquid supply. That mechanism is deterministic, and it is also slow. With about 65.65 million of 66 million AR already circulating as of November 2026, emission has almost stopped, which means the supply side of the thesis now depends entirely on upload volume rather than on any change to the schedule.
AO carries most of the demand-side case. Every process running on AO writes its state to Arweave permanently, so compute activity translates directly into storage purchases denominated in AR. AO reached mainnet in February 2025, and the unresolved question is volume: the case for AR rests on how many developers build processes heavy enough to generate meaningful permanent-storage spend. A market capitalization of about $208 million against a fixed 66 million supply prices in adoption that has not yet arrived at scale.

Arweave's data structure, in which each new block references both the previous block and a randomly selected earlier block, so miners must prove access to historical data and not only recent state.
When a user uploads a file, a small part of the payment covers immediate storage cost and the rest enters a pool that pays miners over time. The model assumes storage cost per gigabyte keeps falling faster than the endowment pays out.

66 million AR, hard-capped, with 55 million created at genesis in June 2018. About 65.65 million AR were in circulation as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko.
Filecoin uses contract-based storage for a defined term that can be renewed or dropped. Arweave uses a pay-once-store-forever structure.
Proof of access, which requires miners to prove they hold randomly selected historical blocks.

No. The wallet address alone is enough.
The permanence model assumes storage costs keep falling, and demand now depends on upload volume, since emission has almost stopped.
