What is FIL?
About Filecoin
FIL is the native token of Filecoin, a decentralised storage network built on IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) that operates a marketplace where users pay storage providers to hold data at negotiated rates. Storage providers must stake FIL as collateral before participating — if they fail to maintain continuous proof of data storage, their staked FIL is slashed. The network uses two cryptographic proof mechanisms: Proof-of-Replication (PoRep), which verifies that a provider has stored a unique copy at the start of a deal, and Proof-of-Spacetime (PoST), which verifies that storage is maintained continuously over the deal's duration. Filecoin launched its mainnet in October 2020; smart contract functionality was added via the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) in 2023.
FIL tokenomics
Filecoin has a fixed maximum supply of 2 billion FIL, with a total supply of approximately 1.96 billion FIL, of which 826,950,326 FIL were circulating as of September 7, 2026, according to Filecoin's network update. New FIL enters circulation as storage provider rewards and as scheduled vesting releases.
Maximum supply — 2,000,000,000 FIL; fixed protocol ceiling that cannot increase
Circulating supply — 826,950,326 FIL as of September 7, 2026, according to Filecoin's September 2026 network update; the remainder of total supply is locked in vesting, collateral, and sector pledges
Minting model — hybrid: simple minting (16.5% of max supply) distributed on a time-based schedule; baseline minting (38.5% of max supply) released proportionally to network storage capacity growth
Annual issuance — as of September 2026, vesting added about 66.7 million FIL a year and block rewards about 21.7 million FIL a year, according to Filecoin's September 4, 2026 network update
Vesting completion — Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation vesting stops on October 15, 2026, which cuts gross FIL issuance by roughly 75%; after that, new issuance is limited to block rewards of about 22 million FIL a year, a little over 2% of circulating supply
Supply tightening mechanisms — FIP-81 increased storage provider collateral requirements (locking more FIL out of liquid circulation); FIP-100 introduced FIL-denominated fee burns, removing tokens from supply proportional to network activity
Slashing — storage providers who fail to submit valid PoST proofs lose a portion of their staked collateral, permanently removing it from supply
What determines FIL's value
FIL's primary demand driver is paid storage deal volume: when users contract with providers to store data on the Filecoin network, FIL changes hands as payment, creating direct utility-based demand independent of speculative interest. AI-related data storage is an emerging demand channel — projects including AethirCloud have deployed Filecoin for verifiable dataset storage, according to CoinMarketCap analysis, tapping into the structural growth in AI training data requirements. The 2026 Filecoin Onchain Cloud (FOC) mainnet launch added S3-compatible APIs and programmable storage services, making Filecoin more accessible to developers building on standard cloud infrastructure patterns.
The main supply headwind has been issuance: as of September 2026, vesting and block rewards together added roughly 88 million new FIL a year, creating consistent sell pressure from recipients monetising their earnings. October 15, 2026 marks a key structural milestone — once Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation vesting ends, that supply source closes and gross issuance falls by about 75%. Protocol-level FIL burns under FIP-100 add a demand-side absorption mechanism that scales with network usage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Filecoin (FIL)
Through two proofs. Proof-of-Replication shows that a provider stored a unique copy at the start of a deal, and Proof-of-Spacetime shows that storage is maintained continuously for the deal's duration.
Providers stake FIL as collateral before taking part. If they fail to submit valid Proof-of-Spacetime proofs, a portion of their staked collateral is lost and removed from supply permanently.
2 billion FIL, a fixed protocol ceiling. The total supply is about 1.96 billion, and 826,950,326 FIL were circulating on September 7, 2026, according to Filecoin's network update.
A large part of the supply is locked in vesting, collateral, and sector pledges. Locked FIL enters circulation over time, so the circulating figure grows even without new minting.
Through a hybrid minting model. Simple minting (16.5% of max supply) follows a time-based schedule, and baseline minting (38.5% of max supply) is released in proportion to network storage capacity growth.
Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation vesting stops, which cuts gross FIL issuance by roughly 75%. New issuance is then limited to block rewards of about 22 million FIL a year, a little over 2% of circulating supply.
As of September 2026, vesting added about 66.7 million FIL a year and block rewards about 21.7 million FIL a year, according to Filecoin's September 4, 2026 network update.
FIP-81 raised storage provider collateral requirements, locking more FIL out of circulation. FIP-100 introduced FIL-denominated fee burns that grow with network activity.
The Filecoin Virtual Machine added smart contracts in 2023. The 2026 Filecoin Onchain Cloud mainnet launch added S3-compatible APIs and programmable storage services for developers used to standard cloud tools.
Projects including AethirCloud have deployed Filecoin for verifiable dataset storage, according to CoinMarketCap analysis. It is an emerging demand channel, not yet a measured share of deal volume.
