What is SYN?
About Synapse
SYN is the governance and staking token of Synapse Protocol, a cross-chain communication network known for its bridge that moves assets between many EVM and non-EVM blockchains. Synapse launched on August 28, 2021 as an upgrade of the Nerve protocol, and separated from Nerve through a governance vote in September 2021, when the NRV token converted to SYN at a rate of 1 NRV to 2.5 SYN. The bridge supports two mechanisms: canonical token bridging, which mints wrapped assets across chains, and liquidity-based bridging, which swaps native assets through stableswap AMM pools that Synapse maintains on each connected chain. Multi-party computation validators secure the cross-chain messaging. Over time Synapse widened its scope beyond a simple bridge into a broader interoperability layer that handles asset transfers, generalized messaging, and swaps, and it later moved to an intent-based network architecture that routes cross-chain transactions by user intent rather than fixed paths. That shift matters because it repositions Synapse from a wrapped-asset bridge, a category that lost market trust after industry-wide exploits, toward routing infrastructure developers integrate directly into applications. SYN is the token at the center of that network, used for DAO governance and, under proposals in progress, staking that aligns liquidity providers and network security.
SYN tokenomics
SYN has a maximum supply of 250 million tokens. Emissions are governed by the DAO rather than a fixed schedule, and the token entered the market through a genesis airdrop and the Nerve conversion. About 219 million SYN were in circulation as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko.
Maximum supply — 250,000,000 SYN
Circulating supply — approximately 219 million SYN (about 88% of the cap) as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko
Market data — market capitalization of about $31 million and a price of about $0.14 as of November 2026, according to CoinGecko; the all-time high was about $4.9 in October 2021
Token origin — converted from Nerve's NRV at 1 NRV to 2.5 SYN during the September 2021 separation
Protocol fees — bridge, deposit, withdrawal, admin, and validator fees fund maintenance and validator rewards
Governance — SYN holders vote on DAO proposals including future emissions and the proposed staking model
Deployments — Ethereum plus Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Chain, and other connected chains
What determines SYN's value
SYN value tracks two things: bridge and messaging volume across the Synapse network, and the market's view of the cross-chain bridge sector. Demand for SYN comes from governance participation and, under proposals in progress, from a staking model that would tie the token to network security and liquidity provision. The protocol earns bridge, deposit, withdrawal, and validator fees, but fee generation has been weak relative to market capitalization, which is the core weakness bridge tokens face: usable infrastructure that does not translate volume into token value.
The sector context cuts both ways. Cross-chain bridges no longer receive the benefit of the doubt after years of high-profile exploits across the industry, which caps sentiment for every bridge token including SYN. Synapse's counter is the move toward intent-based routing and messaging, a narrative that reframes it as interoperability infrastructure and not as a wrapped-asset bridge. The price is far below its October 2021 peak. Thin liquidity at a market capitalization near $31 million (CoinGecko, November 2026) means short-term price moves reflect trading flow more than fundamental change.
