What is a TONERC20?

TONERC20 is the Ethereum-based representation of Gram, the native coin of The Open Network (TON), a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain built in close connection with the Telegram ecosystem. It's an ERC-20 token backed 1:1 by native Gram, created through the TON–Ethereum bridge to let users access the asset's value within Ethereum's infrastructure without leaving familiar ERC-20 rails.

The practical result: if your wallet is MetaMask or any other Ethereum-compatible setup, TONERC20 is how you hold, trade, or deploy Gram exposure without bridging to The Open Network's native chain. The underlying asset is the same; the settlement layer is not.

A few words on names. The Open Network's native coin was known as Toncoin (ticker: TON) for several years, until June 15, 2026, when the community voted with over 81% support to restore its original 2018 name — Gram (ticker: GRAM). The blockchain itself kept the name The Open Network and its abbreviation TON. The ERC-20 wrapped version on Ethereum predates this rebrand and retains the TONERC20 identifier on most exchange platforms, though some have already started updating to labels like "Wrapped GRAM" or "GRAM ERC-20". Why Do People Trade TONERC20?

Traders exchange TONERC20 for several distinct reasons, most of which come down to managing exposure across two separate blockchain environments.

Portfolio rebalancing is the most straightforward case. Many holders acquired TONERC20 when their primary infrastructure was Ethereum-based — it was the most direct path to gain exposure to the asset without learning TON's native wallet format. When it comes time to exit that position or rotate into something else, swapping TONERC20 to USDT or USDC on Ethereum is a clean one-step move that stays entirely within ERC-20 plumbing.

How TON Transactions Work

TONERC20 moves like any other ERC-20 token.
